Linda's Thoughts of the Day : Mother Everyone !

    Author: LindaSwain
Subject: Mother Everyone !
Posted: 5/10/2012 at 4:28pm

I have a few friends who have no children but they are fabulous at mothering people. Mothering is synonymous with loving, caring and giving your attention to someone and providing that wonderful mothering experience to others feels just as good as mothering your own children.
I just chaired the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Annual Benefit here in Philadelphia, where we raise the programming dollars for almost 5,000 children that we serve. (click on the link to see the Ashe kids' dreams) It is a big event with 900 guests and over 600 auction items and of all the duties throughout the year leading up to the event, my favorite is working with the children for a couple of months on the evening’s presentation. So, for a few hours a week I was able to mother these amazing kids and show them how much talent they possessed. Two of the kids did not even know they have incredible voices until I heard them sing in a group and then isolated them to sing solo. It was a gift to me to see their faces when they realized they had yet one more gift.
So, rather than hoping our children are going to remember to make the day special for us, perhaps, Mother’s Day is really a day to celebrate loving, caring and the attention we give people who cross our lives. Depending on their age, location and what is going on in their own lives at the time, breakfast in bed, a visit, or even a phone call from a son or daughter, may get missed and no mom should be disappointed on Mother’s Day.
Of course, I do alert my children days in advance about how much I am looking forward to their handwritten cards on Mother’s Day which is our tradition, and the ones who are home are making dinner for me so I may not be in the kitchen as much this year but mothers are usually happy when everyone is happy, so I am always prepared for who needs more mothering than me on Mother’s Day.
Anyone who loves, cares and gives others their attention, is providing a mothering experience so celebration is in order; kids or no kids. Happy Mothers Day Everyone!

Love, Linda

Linda's Thoughts of the Day : Love, Marriage, and Dancing!

    Author: administrator
Subject: Love, Marriage, and Dancing!
Posted: 2/27/2012 at 11:04am

Ian and I have been married now for 28 years and there have been many changes and challenges in our lives since we first met in New York City in 1984.
Our first meeting was on the dance floor and it has been quite a dance since then. Through moving continents, raising six children, building Swain Tours and Moms on the Move, and all the experiences along the way, we still love to dance together.

So this Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d share what I believe are our “Top 10” reasons why we still find our "Happy Feet.”
1. We support each other’s dreams, even though they are not particularly our own. Our individual dreams, however, include the other. And, all pursuits need to make sense for the family.

2. We do not try to be in charge of the same things and come to consensus on important issues. If we can’t agree, he lets me win on family issues and I let him win on financial issues. It still feels good to get your way sometimes.

3. We let things slide for a peaceful big picture. Ian is not as fond of pets but we have 2 dogs and 2 doves and I don’t like cigars but he smokes them occasionally outside.

4. We try not to project how we want each other to be, or improve, so we rarely feel like we cannot be ourselves in this relationship. Trying to control the other never works and leads too friction.

5. Sundays are “family days.” As our children were growing up, we went to church and kept the kid’s schedules open. Sunday is still family day and whoever is around comes for dinner. Our kids are older now and genuinely enjoy being together, and enjoy us. This is great for our relationship.

6. We made sure we found pockets of time to be alone together without the kids when they were growing up. No matter what the duration, time alone, always helped us realize how much fun we have together. You can lose your sense of humor with 4 teenagers in the house at one time!

7. We have tried and still try to “show up” as a couple for friends and community events instead of allowing that feeling of, “I’m too tired” get the best of us. Showing up always turns out to be the best choice. We continue to maintain long lasting friendships and now have 28 years of new experiences together. This keeps our relationship young.

8. We stay vigilant of negative changes in the house and address them before too long. One day it

occurred to me that everyone was on their laptops in the kitchen and we were communicating with each other less. So, a new rule was formed in the house.

9. We have always shared in “after work” responsibilities so there was no resentment. Whether it was kids homework, cooking, cleaning dishes, driving someone somewhere. We never forget we are a partnership.

10. We still find little ways to let the other know how much we care even though there are not as many surprises as when we first met. Responsibilities can make you forget how much thoughtfulness counts in a relationship and it is as meaningful now as it was 28 years ago.

All relationships require effort from all parties but it does not need to be considered “a lot of work.” If you first consider the positive outcome of your effort, it will be a joyful one. Happy Valentine’s Day and I hope your day is filled with love and joy in your step!

Love ,
Linda

Edited by administrator - 2/27/2012 at 11:05am

I know. Just when you thought you outsmarted fate this year, you will again, get stuck in the long line you were so sure you would avoid. This time, however, be aware that something may happen to you. You may come across an angel. I mean a real one.
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">These angels look like typical people so don’t think you will see a pair of wings about 10 tired customers ahead of you at the cash register. But, this time if you snap out of your trance; thinking about how much time you are wasting in line, or wondering how you’ll get a parking spot at your next stop, or why do you always end up with having to get a “man gift” for the family polyanna, your chances of an angel encounter are great!
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">This is how it happened to me.
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Last Saturday, I was in that spot at a Bed, Bath & Beyond, purchasing some things for some families and thinking about how much I am overspending. The woman behind me who I had not noticed said, ”excuse me.” I turned around and saw a pleasant looking lady, probably in her 60s with big bright eyes that her glasses could not hide.
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">She reached out to me holding a large stack of 20% off coupons and insisted, “You need these.” I had no coupons and I became embarrassed that I hadn’t notice she was only holding one small bag of cotton balls (waiting for 15 minutes in a Bed Bath & Beyond to purchase cotton balls?!) and I hadn’t offered to let her go ahead of me. She insisted I have them and when I asked her to go before me she said,” no that’s okay, they will open up another line.” And sure enough, I heard,”Miss!” and she moved to the next aisle.
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">By the time I placed a couple of boxes on the counter from my cart and turned to thank her again. One off-duty cab came right to her and when she opened the door, he said, “You have a great personality. Welcome to the happy cab!” You will know it is an angel because you will be taken by surprise and you will feel it in your heart. You will think about the encounter after you have it and never forget. You will also think about ways that you can be an angel for someone when they least expect it. And, you will have completed the Angel’s mission concerning you.
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Angels are sneaky and they love when you tell everyone about them.
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Pay attention while you are caring for others and expect the unexpected.
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Have a Very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays filled with love and angels around you.
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">
<P =Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">With love from my family to yours.
Parenting : How to discipline your teens?

    Author: daveharris850
Subject: How to discipline your teens?
Posted: 11/28/2011 at 9:22pm

Teens that reach the point of total defiance can create a strain on the entire family. Parents are responsible for everything the teen does and doesn't do. The teen can choose to stay home from school but the parents will be help responsible if the teen doesn't show up. Many parents are finding help by sending their teens to boarding schools. Here is a great site to help find a good program http://www.teenboardingschools.info/ Another site dedicated to even more defiant teens can be found here. http://www.bootcampsforteens.com/index.html Boot camps can be effective if the teen has stopped doing what their parents ask them. It is important for parents to visit any program they are interested in prior to placing their teen to assure they understand how the program works. They will also be able to meet the people who will be working with their teen.There is also a new category of youth needing help. Children as young as 10 may need to be placed in a boot camp. This site is dedicated to helping parents find boot camps for children.
